Score: 7 Out Of 10

I have always been a fan of the New York band Warrior Soul.  Through the ups and downs, lineup changes, album title changes, meandering between hard rock, punk, I can honestly say that I enjoy most of the band’s catalog, although their previous album Stiff Middle Finger is probably the low point in their catalog for me.  So, I went into Back On The Lash with a lot of hesitation, I loved Chinese Democracy, which was later re-titled Destroy The War Machine, my copy has the former name on it.  So, going from that album to Stiff Middle Finger, I felt like the gesture was being made towards the fans, as it was a huge letdown.  It advertised the return of original guitarist John Rico to play a few solos on the album, but for the most part, the album, and those solos are disjointed and forgettable

At the center of it all is the lead singer, and former Ragging Slab drummer Kory Clarke.  He has never been scared to mix words with anyone, whether it’s to make a political or social statement.  There has also been no issue with talking about going out and having a good time, case in point the track “Let’s Get Wasted” off of Space Age Playboys, or a good chunk of lyrics on this new album.

Back On The Lash is a scorching hard rock album from start to finish.  The songs are much more cohesive on this release than the previous album and much catchier.  The guitar work is a lot stronger, which takes things to another level as well, some of the soloing is what I had hoped to hear from Rico’s appearance on Stiff Middle Finger, but it was not meant to be.  A track like “Thrill Seeker” gives you a lot of what has always drawn me to the band, great riffs, steamrolling bass, and a kick-ass solo.  The production is kind of just ok, but the songs and album as a whole deliver for me, so it compensates for the for the sound.  If you’re remotely a fan of the band, I highly recommend you checking this release out.

Stand Out Tracks: “Thrill Seeker”, “Goin’ Broke Gettin’ High”, and  “I Get Fucked Up”
